How to permanently change defaults with HP 5440 and other printers.

I have a variety of HP printers that I use, including for example a HP 5440 printer. One irritation I run into is constantly have to change the printer settings. Is there anyway of either 1) changing the default settings, or 2) at least getting the software to use my settings as a default, rather than the standard default settings?
