Hi

I would like to know how to password protect or make certain folders only accessable to certain users?

This is done with permissions, one of the stickiest wickets to get your arms around but once you do, it's relatively easy to do what you ask...or screw things up. I've actually locked myself out of a server accidentally, no fun! Looki here:

Generally speaking, you want to Add Permission for the person or group you want to view the folder, and remove permission from everyone else. To do this, right-click the folder, sharing and security, click Add and enter the person you want to have access. Once that's done, Remove the others, although I would allow the SYSTEM to still have access. If you cannot remove due to inherited permissions, click Advanced and remove permission there. This means the folder above the one you're working with has its own set of permissions, and this folder has inherited those permissions. Since you're now changing access to this folder (and all its subfolders) you must dis-inherit these permissions.

That's it in a nutshell, I would practice first on some test folders to get the hang of it. There's a useful feature of SBS called Group Policy that allows you to create groups of users and grant them specific permissions as a group, but that's another lesson. Best of luck.

Depends on your needs. Share permissions and NTFS permissions combine with the most restrictive rights winning. Each can be accessed by right clicking a folder and selecting Sharing and Security.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Ok I have found where I can chnage the premission settings and understand how that works.

I have created a test folder and tried to remove access for all users so that I can add individual users to this folder instead of a group but I recevie the message telling me that I can not remove this user group as it is inheriting premissions from its perent.

Is it safe to turn this on and if so how?

You have to uncheck the box under advanced to not inherit. then choose to Copy the permissions and add/delete who you want.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Thanks have done

I have removed all users which can access this folder accept

Administrators
Creator Owner
System

But other users on the network can still access the folder.

Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

So who is a member of Administrators?

I hope you find this post helpful.
