Is there a way to package a project?
If I want to move a project from Desktop installed on one machine to another, how should I be doing it?
How should I take backup of a project?

All the project information should be in the metadata. To get access to it on another machine, try the following :

in 2 tier (no server connection) - on new machine, create a DSN to connect to the metadata database, then create a "direct connection" project source with "Project Source Manager". When you start MicroStrategy Agent, the project source should show up and you can easily connect to it.

in 3 tier (with server connection) - on new machine, create a "server connection" project source with "project source manager" and point it to the MicroStrategy Intelligence Server. Again, when you start MicroSTrategy agent, this project source should show up and you're up and running.

You need to install MSTR 7 on new machine to get the project source manager.

for backups, just do a regular database backup of the metadata database.
