How can i open old Exchange mailboxes if there's no AD user account associated with the mailbox?

Grant another user rights to that mailbox and open it up in the existing users Outlook.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

There are no more PDC's! There are DC's with FSMO roles!

I am assuming that the mailbox still exists in exchange, if so, look for exmerge, you should be able to pull the mailbox as a pst and open it via outlook.

or what Davetoo said will probably be way easier and faster.

The mailbox needs to be associated with an account. Create a temp account, associate the mailbox with the account, and you can view it, exmerge it, etc.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

Company i work for delete user profile when employee leave but keep the mailboxes.
58sniper suggestion makes sense, but when i create new user it prompts for creation of new mailbox. Cant browse for existing mailbox.
I want to associate my username with those mailboxes as i'm the only one allowed to access their email. How do i do this?

After you have created the temp account suggested above, start exchange system manager, select the mailbox and then reconnect it to this temp account.

If it doesn't leak oil it must be empty!!

Reconnect & Purge functions are greyed out. Does this mean that the mailbox is still associated with a user?

Run the Clean Up Agent against the mailbox store then try the reconnect again.
