how to open a certain directory?

I would like to write a macro which:

1) opens (Open Windows) a specified directory (dir_spec) and then
2) remembers all of the excel files names and then
3) shows these names on the screen.

I have (2) and (3) but I don't know how to do part (1).

Any ideas to help?

What do you mean "opens a directory"? Do you mean you want the user to be able to select a directory and then generate the file listing based on the selection?
