How to number pages

How do you number pages in Acrobat so you have a footer with the page number like you do in word. I tried the number pages command but that doesn't seem to work. I am using Acrobat 5.0

What sort of file are you creating the PDF from? Can't you put the page numbers in there before converting to PDF?
