Hi!

I would like to use NIM to BOS install an LPAR of my pSeries 650 machine. The partition has 4 ethernet cards, but none of them has IPL ROM.

According to the NIM docs I can (could) create IPL ROM emulation image to a floppy or a tape. Unfortunately I have none of these devices accessible for my LPAR.

Can I somehow use a CD image for network boot?

All the interfaces are are the same type: 10/100/1000 Base-TX PCI-X Adapter (14106902)

go to the SMS menu, select ipl devices select the ethernet device assign to the lpar you want to install to, then follow the instructions

Oh, thanks! I succeed to boot and initiate install on one of my LPARs.

BUT

The other LPAR in the same machine does not want to work. In the SMS menu it tells, no network device found for boot. Even though the its profile contains 4 ethernet interfaces of the same type than the working LPAR.

How can this be?

make sure that the interfaces are not allocated to any other lpar

plamb: Now I have the luck to freely experiment with my p650. Thus I tryed to start a partition with EVERY network adapter.
On the SMS menu, selected "setup for remote IPL" and waited for a long list of adapters (there was 12 adapters in the LPAR), but only 2 was in the list.

Both adapters are in te CEC box, not in the IO drawers. One is the integrated 10/100 eth adapter, and the other is a 10/100/1000 adapter.

Strangely there are 3 more network adapters in the same box, of the same type.

Well - an idea came up to me - can it be that this machine can only initiate network boot from its first PCI bus?

I have "moved" the eth from lpar to lpar using the profiles.you must make sure that you remove the device from the previous profile before you allocate to the new profile
