Our Tivoli TSM setup is currently storing on an IBM3583 library with 60 slots and 4 LTO-1 drives and we're running out of space. To solve the problem we are acquiring LTO-3 drives. We're keeping the library and replacing the 4 drives. I am keeping 1 LTO-1 drive for backwards compatibility. The library holds up to 6 drives. The question is, what is the best way to move all our backups and stored data from the LTO1 media to the LTO3 ?? Is there documentation about this somewhere ??

Do a move data and specify the new storage pool

move data XXXXXX stg=YYYYYYY

XXXXXX = volume name
YYYYYYY = LTO3 storage pool

Hope this helps.

You can use the 'move data' command, here is some addition food for thought.

Not sure if you are aware of this LTO3 drive can not read/write to a LTO1 media.

Once we have the three LTO3 drives installed in the library and the operating system is able to see the new drives.

Within the TSM Server define another library, make sure that the scratch/private category is not the same as the original library. Reason: LTO3 tape drive can not read/write to a LTO1 media.

Now the TSM Server will think that there are two library but in reality there is on.

Library A with one LTO1 tape drive.
Library B with three LTO3 tape drives.

Tape pool A, were the data is going to library A (LTO1 Drive) update the 'next pool' to point to tape pool B which is going to be library B. Lower the migration threshold for tape pool A so that the data will migrate to tape pool B.

Or

Update the disk pool to point to tape pool B.
Over time the data in library A will expire while new data
will be going to tape pool B.

Good Luck,
Sias

Correct, LED888. We're still using LTO2s and I forgot about the LTO3s incompatibility with LTO1s. Thanks for the clarification. Good call!

LED888, thanks for the very useful info. I was in-fact aware of the incompatibility between the LTO1/3 drives. I am keeping one (maybe two) of my LTO1 drives specifically for this reason. Rather than using "move data" manually, I was thinking just lowering the migration point of the LTO1 pool to force the movement to LTO3 and let it go by itself. So it looks like we're right on track.

Let me know if you have any other suggestions. I do appreciate the input.

Hi

Are you sure about compatibility?

My understanding:

MEDIA____|READ BY____|WRITE BY
LTO1 1,2,3 1,2
LTO2 1,2,3 2,3
LTO3 1,2,3 3

In this case, you don't need to keep an LTO1 drive at all!

Cheerio

Thanks Mattt, had a biological memory leak.[blush] [morning]

LTO3 drive can read LTO1 media.
Since this is the case.

1: Upgrade all the drives to LTO3, then update all the
LTO1 media to readonly. Once all the data that are on
the LTO1 media have been reclaimed. Check out the LTO1
media(s).

2: If we are going to keep the LTO1 drive.
Define two library.
One library with just the LTO1 drive.
The other library with the LTO3 drive.
At this point we can update the next pool for Tape
pool A, to point to tape pool B and then lower the
migration threshold for tape pool A so that the data
will migrate to tape pool B.

Good Luck,
Sias [peace]
