hi guys

we have moved the db from local to the server
now we cant access the db, seesm like we have missed some
directions to the db and the lock file,,2 users gone just use it ,,would be very thankful for help

/tommy

You have to copy ALL files that go along with a table's .db file.

If you moved the tables, but kept forms/etc local to each workstation, are you certain that the forms/reports/libraries/etc use aliases for EVERY table?

You don't want to copy the lock (.lck) file.

You must make sure that all users' BDE points to a common .net file. This path MUST be the EXACT same path, character for character, on EVERY machine that will access that data.

thx for the answer

ihave in BDE administrator point to g: thats the driver on the server,,should i point to the folder where the DB is or?(for the net file) ex g:\folder\database or just G:\ ,under Paradox in BDE Administrator,,then restarted theparadox then he ask me if i would like create a new db (i ´think) ..uknow i´m newbie on this .-

As long as they are all the same, and you don't point the netdir to the same directory where ANYTHING else is going on, it doesn't matter much. I would probably create and point to g:\folder\netdir just to keep it all by itself.

I have no understanding of the scenario surrounding the 'create a new db'.

ok

what i see is that the paradox9 (runtime)is installed on the local machine just, and we got db in the database folder on the server nothing else.. do we have to install paradox 9 on the server to?

thanks for answers

Tommy

No, you don't need Paradox on the server.

Are you able to access the tables on the server?

Since you use Runtime, I'm guessing that you are using forms.

Are the forms on the server somewhere, or on each workstation?

Do the forms' datamodel point to the tables on the server?

If you get errors when opening a form, what errors do you get?

Is the BDE Administrator NETDIR path set to EXACTLY the same path on EVERY workstation trying to share the tables on the server?

hi
the forms are on the server in the folder called database
en the user got full rights to the server

""Do the forms' datamodel point to the tables on the server?""
where do i do that in ?

"If you get errors when opening a form, what errors do you get?" Yes i get..telling i cant open ex, 342342342.db .do u want create a new one?..

BDE Administrator NETDIR path set to g: but the forms is in G:\\folder\database

thx again man

Tommy,

I had a similar problem when setting up a small network within our office. The solution I came up with was to map a virtual drive for the NETDIR. ie Set drive P as c:\Pdoxnet through 'My Computer', then on each client machine this was set as the NETDIR in BDE administrator as drive P. On each runing version of Paradox I then set the working directory to where all my tables and forms are stored - not forgetting each version running needs it's own Private directory setting up as well.

The only trouble I sometimes get is that XP loses the mapped drive and I have to go and reset it, a minor inconvenience I know but at least the network works!

Hope this is of help,

Regards,

Lewy

Rather than setting the working directory, you should use aliases in all of your forms/reports/libraries/etc.

Which is why I NEVER use mapped drives. Only UNC paths in aliases. Then the network works more often :)

I also, by the way, only use UNC paths for the netdir setting in the BDE Administrator.

I got tired of things not working because Windows loses its mind.

Some say UNC is slower.

But it is a LOT more reliable, and a LOT less frustrating, than trusting Windows to do things right.
