I've installed a Megaraid 9240 controller and set up an array on my desktop computer so that I have additional protection for my photographs (I'm a photographer). How do I monitor the health of the disks in the array? Shouldn't they be periodically scanned? I've installed Megaraid Storage Manager. Is this the right software that I should be looking at?

The Array and drives are constantly being monitored by the raid adapter, and yes MSM is what you want, if there are any issues, it will display them on the screen.

Thanks. So if there's a problem and MSM is not installed, would I get warned on boot up when the Raid adaptor displays information after the BIOS screen?

I've installed MSM but it doesn't have any background process or tray icon so I don't see how it can display any messages to me.

yes, but only during boot, since it wasn't designed for desktops, but servers, it is an always on and forward application. But you can minimize it, but it should always be running.

Makes sense. I'm not pro on these things, but for a workstation, a warning when I boot up should be sufficient.

I will disconnect the power to a drive while the machine is off, boot up, and see what it tells me.
