We currently have a server running Windows Server 2000 and SQL Server 2000. Our desired outcome is Windows Server 2008 and SQL Server 2005. Is there a logical progression to get there, or should I just do a clean install with everything and use a backup copy of the db to setup the new SQL?

I understand that Windows Server 2008 and SQL 2000 are not compatible, but not sure if Windows Server 2000 and SQL 2005 are compatible.

Thanks in advance for any recommendations/advice.

It would be best to backup your database and do a fresh install of win2k8 and sql. It would probably be a good idea to get new hardware too since your box is probably pretty aged in computer years.

Thanks for the info. I assumed that's what I'd have to do.

Actually, the box is only a year old. We elected to keep the old software when we got it so we could keep the expenses down.

There are no more PDC's! There are DC's with FSMO roles!
