I have an irregular image of a piece of machinary with a black background. I need to add it to another image of a facory. The component should in effect overlay the factory image but the black background must not be visible.

Is this possible to do?

Assuming your two pictures are bitmap images (.bmp, .gif, .jpg, etc.) you can use the Magic Wand tool.

Open the machinery picture, select the Magic Wand tool, set the options for Tolerance and Edge, click on the black background and delete. Depending on the Tolerance and Edge settings you choose, you should be able to get a pretty good effect.
