How to measure length of paths in Illustrator

Hello. I am making maps using Illustrator and its working great, except I can't figure out how to measure the length of a path (in inches, pixels, ect.). The best the measure tool can do is measure the length of a strait line + give the angle. Illustrator Help couldn't answer my question. Is this possible? If not its okay, but would be very convenient...

One way I've done this in the past, is to create a pattern brush that has a certain length per segment, then apply it to a path and count the segments.
