Hello all, this is the first time I have posted to this forum. I look forward to seeing you all and hope that I can be of assistance to someone in the future. Here is the situation I have.

I have created folders on our server for each user. I have set the permissions so that only the said user and the Admin can access its contents. What I would like to do is map the My Documents folder on their local machine to this new folder, essentially taking the place of the my documents folder. This is two-fold, security, and for backup purposes. I am pretty sure this can be done, as I have seen a reference to it somewhere before, but I can't find anything on it. Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

Thanks!

Try right-clicking on the My Documents icon and select Properties. In the Properties Tab click on Move button, which will bring up the Browse window so that you can browse to the target folder.
We do this for our Windows 2000 Clients, so that we can automatically back up the contents of their My Documents folder without creating too much network traffic.

David.

You can do this using group policies, which is a lot easier than visiting each machine when there are large numbers of users concerned.

If you don't use Organisational Units (OUs) and policies already create a new OU in Active Directory Users and Computers, and move the users concerned to this OU. Then you can right-click the OU and click properties then group policy. Edit the current policy or create a new one. Once inside the policy the setting you want is

User Configuration\Windows Settings\Folder Redirection\My Documents

You can enter something like \\server\share\%username% into this setting - next time the policy is applied (probably when the user next logs on) the user's My Documents folder will automatically redirect to their share.

I agree, use the group policies and set up the folder redirects, anything in the Documents and settings will be redirected to the specified network folder. This is far easier than visiting every PC.
