How to manipulate data using Jet AND MSDE at the same time? 1

The data is stored on one data server. My objective is to have some work stations use the Access Jet DB engine due to their less frequent use (about 11 PCs). I'd like to have two PCs using the MSDE DB engine because of their intense use. Is it possible to somehow link the data to both DB engines at the same time. I can't afford the SQL Server solution for the number of workstations I have in my business. If there is a way to accomplish this object, where can I learn how to do it?

Thank you,

Steve G.

Provided all the Table, field names, etc are all the same you should be able to link the tables on start up. How do you determine which PC's to link to the MDSE?

Is this 2 different Apps or does the data need to be shared across both databases?

Thank you for replying so soon. I didn't expect to hear from anyone soon.

I personally will choose which two PCs will link to the MSDE. I will personally choose which other workstations
will use Jet DB engine. So this is possible? Where can i
find detailed help on this subject. A internet site or book or what?

Thanks again!

Steve

If you use an Access MDB then the tables can be linked on start up. If you use an ADP then you must connect to an SQL Server which the MSDE is one. I am not sure on an MSDE that you can use "linked server" which is what would need to be done with the Access MDB backend to use an ADP for these type of tables. Look under sql server help for "linked server". A linked server can make the Access MDB tables look like sql server tables to your application.

I gave you a star for your helpful information!

Hey cmmrfrds!

I really got frustrated checking into the "linked server"
issue. It's too complicated and infinite! While checking around on the Internet I ran into a reference to the new
SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. This seems like a viable option. What do you think? I know that it's new and books on it are still lacking. There's some good online ocumentaton. And very important, in MSDE, the Workload Governor (also known as the throttle) caused performance limitations as the number of concurrent users increased. SQL Server Express does not have a Workload Governor!

I am not familiar with the SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. What is the cost of this product and does it come with client side tools such as Query Analyzer. If the cost is low and there are tools then it sounds like an interesting option.

It's free! I guess it's Microsoft's answer to the likes of MYSQL. Check out the following link to learn more about the software. Let me know what you think. Perhaps we should both get on the band wagon.

Thanks again for following this thread!

Only the beta is free. Future versions will cost the same big buck$ that the current SQL Server products cost.
