I must be missing something here. I've been trying to find out how to backup app data for my ios devices,ipod/iphone etc.

If I have an app installed that has data. Game files saved or gps trips logged or whatever data is saved by that app. But I want to uninstall that app temporarily and have the option of re-installing it later and still have my data. How can I accomplish this? Its seems like it should be a simple thing, but I can't seem to find any examples of how to do it....

Im running Lion on my macbook pro but I'm new to macs. This is my first one and I've only had it a few weeks, so i may be missing something simple.

Any suggestions? or if anybody can point me in the right direction I would appreciate it.

thanks

AFAIK, there's no Apple-sanctioned way of selectively restoring game save states; a restore from iTunes back-up will wind back all apps and settings. You might have a look at something like "Phone Disk", which enables the iDevice to be mounted as a disk and hence access the app files; I use a program on my Mac called "Phone View" to archive all texts from my iPhone.

thanks, i tried a couple of apps that were supposed to let you browse the files but i havnt found one yet that would let me copy them. I'll see if i can find "phone view" and try that.

It seemed to me like such a natural, basic need to back up your data that i MUST be missing something simple, but i guess not.

thanks again

This is much easier when the iOS device is jailbroken.

Some developers offer options to backup within their individual app. I have some apps that can back up their data to DropBox (example: ShopShop).

Beware that apps periodically update and the data that you have backed up previously may not restore properly to the newer version of the app.

After what i have read, I will have to give more thought to jailbreaking. Last time i checked there wasnt a jailbreak for my ios version, so i guess its time to check again. I have managed to copy my app data using "Phone View" but I havnt tried uninstalling an app and then re-installing and copying the data files back over to see if it works or just trashes my app.
