How to make Transparent Background ?

I've tried several tutorials, even posts in this forum. I must be missing something? I'm using corel photopaint 8. I am designing an 80 x 80 pixel avatar. Across the top of it will be my name (using a font from the program). I want to save it as a GIF file so that only my name is shown and the background would be transparent.

If someone has the time to help me I really need it. I'm not new to software or this program. I'm able to manage quite a few things in it. I've made animated GIFs etc. But for some reason, no matter what I do I always get a solid background. I need some sort of step-by-step guide. I have no idea what I'm talking about

First make sure your image is in Paletted 8-bit color (image/mode/paletted(8-bit)).
Then when you export your image as a gif you will be given the transparency option, select the Image Color option, click on the Pick tool within the gif export screen and select the background color from the Origional image on the LHS.

To get the best result make sure the background color is close to the color you will be placing the gif on when your finished with it. Even thought your making the background transparent it makes a big difference. Have a go and you'll see what I mean.

I was missing the "select the Image Color option". That step seems to be left out in several articles. You have explained it perfectly.
