1. The gridline incriments can be modified nearly an infinite number of ways, when the axis is numeric
2. A category axis has a fixed number of major and minor gridlines, base on the number of major elements and groups.
3. the SHAPE of the chart can affect the geometry: a TALL skinny chart or a SHORT fat chart, changes the way the gridlines appear.
BOTTOM LINE: I don't believe there's any way to CALCULATE "square" gridlines. YOU will have to play with the elements that YOU have and eyeball it best YOU can.
