Hi all,
So the subject says it all, can I do this for Win 7?

In my opinion...with so many people doing remote-pc stuff, "Shutdown" should never be the default. Regardless of my humble opinion, is there a way for me to be empowered to have an individual free choice in this matter?
Thanks,

The command Shutdown /r run as a batch file run via Scheduled Tasks at Log Off, or Shutdown, or any other scheduled event, might be something you could look at.

You could look at Group Policy and remove certain users from the User Group allowed to shutdown the system.

Computer Configuration\Windows Settings\Security Settings\Local Policies\User Rights Assignment\ Shut down the System.

How do I remove the 'Shutdown' option on a per user start menu?

Right-click the Start button on the Start menu, select properties and change Power Button Action to your required option

The only options for that are:
Do Nothing
Sleep
Hibernate
Shut Down
(I'm not sure if that actually refers to the "Shut Down" GUI button or the physical power button)

But the GUI "Shut Down...", when clicked, gives me that standard:
"What do you want the computer to do?" with the list of the options mentioned above plus Restart, Log Off, Switch User, and often an"Install updates and shut down" option.

What I'm getting at is that in the past (XP) there was a way to set which one of those showed up *by default* you could set it once to 'restart', and then quickly restart with two quick clicks, instead of "Click, look at dropdown, click dropdown, scroll to choice, click choice, then click again"

Now--because the "Shut Down" is *always* sitting there as the default option--one missed beat and I could remotely shut down my computer with no recourse but to drive to work on a weekend and physically hit the switch.

Sure, the 'fix' could be the Marx Brother's line "Don't do that". But so many things are 'goof-proofed' (or goof-protected)--sometimes even to a fault, and this one, (again, my opinion) rises to the level that I would think MS would spend some time on.
Thanks,

If you followed my instructions, then it's the GUI shutdown button. That's why I advised on it. However ...

>The only options for that are:

Shut Down

... sounds like you actually went to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options\System Settings\Choose What the PowerButtons Do\When I Press the Power Button. Which does indeed control what the physical power button does, and has far fewer options.

I would expect, if following my tip, the following options to be available:

Switch User
Log off
Lock
Restart
Sleep
Shutdown
Logoff

Strongm is 100% correct - right click the start orb, left click properties and change the power button option in there, click on apply.

Works a treat.

Note, you can also do it by right clicking on the shut down button itself, going to properties, which yields the same dialog - and is perhaps a bit more intuitive.

Yes, that worked...I gave a star but forgot to reply.
I did not originally have the "properties" option on the start button because I'm using ClassicShell, and didn't realize classic shell had moved that option off of the Start button right-click.
Thanks,
