Hello all:

We have a website that is created using SharePoint Portal with SQL server 2000 as a back end database. The site is in a local domain and users can only access the site if they have an account in the Active Directory (that is located in a separate box but the same domain). Now my boss wants the home page of the website to be visible to everyone without requiring users to log in and only to display the login prompt when they try to access the other parts of the website. Currently, on IIS I have not checked anonymous access and any user when they typed in the website's url, they would be asked to put in their username and password before they are allowed to see the website. Is there a way to have only the home page to be displayed without authentication and then when they click on the several links to view the other pages, to display the login prompt?

Thanks in advance.

Set up your top level site as anonymous access to authenticated users. Create a sub site off the main site and select "Use Unique Permissions" when creating it.

Once the site is created, go into the site settings -> Site Admin -> Manage Anonymous access and you'll see that the "Allow all authenticated users to access site" is set to "NO". Then you'll have to add users or cross site groups to have authority to the new site.

You can create a LINKS webpart on the top level site that will link to the sub site(s). When a user clicks on the subsite link, they'll be prompted for a userID and password if they're not authorized to it. If they ARE authorized to it, they'll get in.

Tom.
