If it is a Thinkpad, you may be able to use "access connectons". It will turn your radio off when it detects a wired connection. Also, I have users make a shortcut to their wireless nic on the desktop. Then, they "right click" on that shortcut and choose disable.
I used to use NetSwitcher which is a shareware program and I seem to remember that being able to do it.
If you have a Toshiba there is a utility on their support site which allows this - I had it on my Tecra 9100 and it worked well. It may be worth checking if it'll work anyway as it's a free download.
