XP custom boot screen.txt

What this will do; replace the stock windows start up screen with a bmp of your own design.

This is for Microsoft XP.

Step #1: Open the boot.ini file for editing
-----------------
Right click my computer -> Properties
Advanced tab
System Startup
Edit

Or edit boot.ini in C:\
(you may have to change the file status from read only, and may have to change the explorer view to show system and hidden files)
-----------------------
Step #2: Edit the file:
Add switches at end of multidisk line:
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition" /fastdetect /bootlogo /noguiboot

(there must be a space between switches; most systems will be adding:
/bootlogo /noguiboot )

-----------------------------------------
Step #3:
Create a 640X480, 16 color image and put it in your windows folder (c:\windows) . Name it boot.bmp.

It must be exactly 640 x 480 pixels and 16 colors. A free program named Irfanview will allow you to save files in this format.

Thanx for the info, although it is a bit dated and very well known...

Remember that part that goes "if you don't have anything nice to say...don't say anything at all"?

Absolutely no reason to talk down to this person, he's trying to help.

Davetoo - I was not down talking this guy... I thanked him for the info and just said that it was already a known way to do it...

and if that what I had said came across as down talking, then I apologize, it was not meant that way...

PS: I was brought up to say the bare truth, as that will only hurt once, but not saying anything at all could hurt more often then that one time...

Datetoo - you should practice what you preach my friend :)

History a has proved that both Ben and Dave are helpful genuine members of Tek-Tips and perfect gentlemen too.

Thanks Linney,

I know Dave as a helpful member and as a gentleman, thus I was inclined to respond in a friendly and sincere manner... and thought that Dave may have had a bad day, I know it happened to me a few times in the past...

greif1,
[tab]Why not put this in a FAQ? There is one in there about customizing the start-up but it utilizes third-party software.

It came across as condenscending to me, so I put my thoughts forward.

I don't have bad days. ;-)

Practice what I preach? lol...that's funny, thanks for the info, but it is a bit dated you know.
