Just built a new PC with all new components including harddrive. When the HD gets formatted by Windows XP Home, it always ends up being the E: drive. I understand XP doesn't assign drives letters with the HDs first. How do I get the bootable HD to have drive letter C:?

Have you got a zip drive - if so, install with it disconnected. XP DOES allocate letters to hard drive partitions first, but it confuses zip drives for hard drives (may also happen with other devices - just make sure you only have hard drive and CD/DVD connected during install).

PS. Just one partition on drive?

Have a look at

Control panel => administrative tools => conputer management => disk management

You should be able to change the drive letter here.

Good Luck §;O)

dkdude - you can't change system drive letter in disk management. There are methods to do that - but not recommended as many registry entries need changing too.
