Does anybody know how to configure Apache 2.2.x so it returns file size information to the browser/download manager when downloading a file?
I tried looking everywhere, read everything, googled it, nobody knows!

Apache uses the HyperText Transfer Protocol. The protocol itself doesn't allow for this. An http server just serves pages and doesn't announce to the world what size file it is serving. There are some file types and extensions that the browser doesn't know how to display so the default is to ask if you want to download the file. This all takes place at the client side. The server just sends it to the client. What the client does with it doesn't matter much. If you need this information, there are plenty of download scipts you can use. Here are a couple places you can look:

If you find yourself transfering a lot of files, you may want to look into an ftp server which is designed to use the File Transfer Protocol.
