I need to create a model of the solar system...
How does one make the spherical object rotate about a certain axis....plus what do I have to do to make the moon revolve around the earth and at the same time make the earth revolve around the sun ?

Hello

That is a nice coincidence. I am myself working on an animation of rotation in particle systems!

First you would create sun, earth and moon, then you link earth to moon using the link button on the main toolbar and and then (probably) the earth/moon system as a whole to the sun. Same for other planets and satellites.

The procedure for linkage is :

1. Select an object to become the 'child'

2. choose 'select and link' from main toolbar

3. Drag the link cursor from the child object to the object you want to link it to. When the cursor turns white, let go of mouse button.

The parent object will flash for a moment to show the link is made.

4. test the link by performing a movement on the parent, the child will follow this.

5. Leave link mode by clicking the select button on the main toolbar.

Now....

To rotate the earth around the sun, you just rotate the Sun!

In my system I am using 'transform (rotate)type in' to achive the perfect speed and smoothness. You can find this under 'tools'.Put the value in degrees into the correct plane in the offset box and this updates the absolute position.

My own requirements have not demanded that I link electron to nucleus yet so you are ahead of me in needing such a configuration.

Of course you then have a problem regarding the materials you apply to, say, the surface of the earth in that the surface should not be seen to be rotating with the moon!

The key to this problem, I think, would be to create secondary spheres for all bodies and position the ones you have linked inside these secondaries. You apply the material to the secondary earth , for example, and leave it
unlinked to the moon so that the inner sphere is rotating but the surface sphere is still.Wheels within wheels!

Sounds great but let me know if it works!
