Hi,

Awkward situation: I can log on to DOMAIN (WIN 2000 server) from WIN 98 and WIN XP PRO, but can't find the option in WIN XP home edition.

Is there a solution or this type of logon is not supported?

Thanks!

Officially, XP Home can't join a domain.

Hope This Helps, PH.

Hi again,

I presume that the only solution is an upgrade to WINXP PRO. My boss will be thrilled!

PHV is absolutely right, XP Home can't join a domain (otherwise we'd all be buying XP Home rather than forking out for XP Pro, wouldn't we ? ;-) )

However, there is a way of using an XP Home machine on a domain in order to use file shares.

Basically, you set up the XP Home machine in a workgroup with the same name as the domain and create a username/password in XP Home which matches one on the domain.

Not ideal, but might help you if you just want to copy files to and fro.

Haven't tried this myself but I have come across references to it more than once. Try Googling "XP home domain workgroup" for more info.

Of course by going the route that Steve has mentioned you have some licensing issues to deal with too.

Each user accessing the server for file share access still needs to have an SBS User CAL.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Good point Mark !
(naturally the same would be true for XP Pro clients).

While we're on the subject of licensing...

One other useful SBS licensing nugget is that SBS CALs cover you for CALs on other Windows servers in the SBS domain.
