Can someone explain to me how to load a cisco 2500 router with IOS 12. I have can hyperterminal to my router but how wha command do I use to load it. Also, is this the same for a 1900 switch. Or there is a link that can tell me how to do this step by step. Thxs in advance...

you need to be able to access a tftp server and download the ios to the router via that.

do you have an ethernet port that you can configure on it to connect to a pc?

after that you just need to type on the router
copy tftp flash

then fill out the questions as it asks for them
ip of tftp server
name of file
etc...

when it comes back up you should do a copy run start and then your good.

Thxs...Also, is there any where I can download Cisco IOS's.

cco.cisco.com. Login and (I think) a valid service contract are required.

Also be aware that there are minimum requirements in terms of RAM and flash for the various IOS versions. These depend on the IOS level itself, and also what features you want. For instance a basic IP IOS needs less flash for storage and less RAM to run than an IOS that includes IPSec, for instance.

If you have a valid contract & signon for Cisco.com the IOS upgrade site ( is the place to go for your IOS. Before you load it the planner site will advise the minimum requirements for the IOS you select.

Without a signon you will not get access to this. However if you are loading it to fix a problem, it may be posible to raise a TAC case, and get them to make it available to you.

I am attempting the same / similar upgrade on a 2924C XL switch. When I enter the "copy tftp flash" command, I don't get the expected question(s) but I get a reply of "copy to or from flash not implemented"

How do I get past this issue? Is there something I need to configure on the switch to allow copying to and from flash?

Thanks 'themut' but I have tried that. Have you ever run into "copy to or from flash not implemented" ??? [nosmiley]

For some reason I can not get the switch to communicate with my (Solarwinds) TFTP server application [tar /x tftp://10.1.0.118//C:\TFTP-Root\c2900XL-c3h2s-mz.120-5.WC2.tar flash:] just times out. So currently I am attempting to do the "copy tftp flash" command from the switch (via Hyperterminal). When I enter the "copy tftp flash" command I expect to get asked questions, but instead I get "copy to or from flash not implemented" in response. Does this mean I have to configure something on the switch to allow this command to work, or does it just mean I am still not communicating with my tftp service?

NOTE: The PC that I have my tftp server app. running on, is also the same unit that I am using hyperterminal on to directly connect to the console port on the back of this switch. Everthing is here at my desk, not remote.

The procedure for the 2900 XL is not the same as in a router it is a bit different, that's why I sent you the link that explains how to do it. Even though it is running IOS the upgrade procedure is somewhat different.
