How to limit access to list entries?

I have a sharepoint site, with two users(user1 and user2), and two subsites(test1 and test2), listed in the "Links" section. Each user only has access to one of the subsites, and both have access to the main site.

What I'd like to be able to do is only show the sites that are available to a particular user, and not show the others.

In my example, user1 has access to subsite test1, and user2 has access to test2. On the main site, I'd like the "Links" section to only show site test1 for user1, and only test2 for user2.

Is this possible? If so, how is it done?

It is not possible with WSS v2, since you can't set permissions on item-level, i.e. you can't hide things a user does not have access to.

In WSS v3 and MOSS 2007 this has been solved.
