To config Webmin, I need to run a script that runs only outside of XFree86. I've tried using Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and it kills X, but then the logon GUI kicks back up. How can I get logged into a non-graphical environment.

CTRL-ALT-F1 -> F5...

GUI is probably on CTRL-ALT-F7 or higher.

You may need to get past the GUI login for these to work.

The GUI should have a command shell program/applet in it which might be fine also.

edit /etc/inittab
search for a line:

# Default runlevel
id:4:initdefault:

and change it to
id:3:initdefault:

which will not boot into X11, but to a multiuser shell.
The number may vary on your system, but should be documented in the head of inittab. Runlevel 4 is X11-runlevel on my system, but it might be different on yours.

If you only like to switch once to the console, 'ctrl-alt-F2' or ...F1, ... F5 like described by thedaver should work (so give him an asterix).
