Is there a option or preference to not update the pdf version when saving. We use Acrobat 6 on OS 10.3. When opening 1.3 or 1.4 pdf files we need to maintain the version after saving. Now the files are being updated to 1.5 which will not work with our rip. I currently have to print a new postscript file and redistill if I make changes to the pdf. I thought I saw an option for this but now cannot find it.

Thank you... When set to acrobat 4 compatible does this control the version when simply selecting "save" from the file menu. Or do you have to go to the Advanced menu for each file?

No, as far as I know, you can't force "save" to always save in an older format. For print production, you really want to go through the PDF Optimzer, though, if you don't have other workflow tools (other software to pre-flight/check PDFs). You can remove troublesome things, like LZW compression, with Optimizer.

What RIP do you use?

We use Pitstop to preflight and correct our customer files. That is why I am frequently resaving pdfs. We have an HP-indigo digital press in house that only supports v1.4. I also have noticed that when I resave pdfs in Acrobat 6, Quark 6 tells me they are an "unsupported version" when trying to import. When saved back they always import with no error.)

Acrobat 6.0 added new compression that most other programs won't support. That's the main difference. In a production enviroment, I would suggest only using 6.0 for exactly what we're talking about: down-saving customer files to a more compatible version!
