Sorry if this has already been answered - I'm new to this.
If I have a task that takes 5 days of effort, but the programmer can only work 50%, MP changes my 5 days into 10, which is the correct elapsed time (duration). Easy enough I guess at this level, by what about a project with 50 days of effort, and 5 resources who all work different %? It starts to look like a six month project, instead of two months. How can I see that the task is actually 50 days of effort?

U can:
1 - set the duration in the task, or in the resources as "Work"
2 - limit the resource calenders to more closely mirror their real capacity for this task, and/or set their percentage of availability to less than 100%.
3 - Then, AFTER MS Proj changes the work assignments, re-edit the Work assigned each task.

That should leave you in the right place. At which point you probably baseline.

Thanks, guys... in reading your answers I tried a few things, and found that baselining doesn't give me what I wanted to see. But you did make me read the HELP in detail.
I now know that I want to see "work" as a column.
So I set up a task as 20 days. Then assign 2 people, the duration changes to 10 days. On the TASK USAGE, I inserted a column - way down at the bottom of the drop down is WORK.
When I add this, I see WORK=160hrs, DURATION=10days.
From TOOLS, OPTIONS I changed the "work is entered in" to DAYS, and then my TASK USAGE shows WORK=20days, DURATION=10days.
Now it makes sense. :-D
