Hi all,
All I want is SMS on my desktop machine. Every Microsoft install package that I've tried for sql 2008 has failed completely. Is it physically possible to have SMS 2008 exist on a Windows 7 64-bit box?

I get messages saying .Net 3.5 is not installed. It is installed, both in Framwork and Framework64, same with .NET 4.0.

I get messages saying "This program has known compatibility issues with this version of windows.."

I get messages saying I need sql-server 2008 SP1 installed--I don't have nor do I want the *database* installed, I just want the darn Studio installed so I can connect to the real servers from my desktop.

I've googled this and gone to 'special' downloads from Microsoft that supposedly address this issue but everything ends up with a fail.

Does anyone here have a solution to this? Thanks,

it is possible. There is a set of instructions about the failure with .net - if not mistaken you need to go to one of the sub-folders and install it from there instead of the main setup.

but both SP1 and R2 install fine on W7 64 bit

You should create a SQL 2008 SP1 slipstream install and that should fix the problems.

Even with the client tools you should be installing the various service packs on your workstation to fix bugs in the client tools.

Well, I threw up my hands and figured I'd install the 2005 SMS--I dont' care--I just want to do some TSQL and various work from this home workstation. The message I got this time was "Upgrade Blocked: You already have a higher version".

But I *don't* (!!!). A search for ssms.exe on my machine turns up nothing. I gather because it assumes the "Comact" or "Express" edition is installed (without the studio) but it nixes the install anyway.

However, when I look in Programs & Features, there is a dizzying array of SQL-this and SQL-that of varying versions. There are 9 total items under Programs & Features for SQL Server and I've never installed (explicitly) any of them--it's all things like "Compact" edition, "Publishing Wizard", "Compact 3.5 Design tools", etc.

My guess is that Visual Studio 2008 and 2005 may have installed them. I'm afraid that uninstalling anything will break the visual studio--even though within VS2008 I only connect to my dev servers, never to any local compact edition (that I know of anyway).

I think I might have to bite the bullet and un-install everything on this workstation that starts with "Sql Server". I recall a few years ago a similar mess where if I installed an "express" edition of sql server the mess it made was so profound that no other version of sql server could be installed without re-installing the OS. I don't want to have to go that route.

depending on the error youre getting you may need to reinstall the OS. I had to do that in one of my machines but on my case setup was just exiting without any message

Ok, SSMS 2008 is finally installed successfully.

I had to first remove all nine SQL-Server installed items from the "Programs & Features". There was "Express", "Compact", "Tools", blah, blah, blah (again--none of which were explicitly installed).

So it seemed any new "real" setup with the words "SQL Server" in it just made Windows confused. Then had one more install fail and had to upgrade Visual Studio 2008 to SP1 (no idea why but whatever), and now I'm good to go.
