I have just installed Linux on my Laptop (Mandrake10.0 distribution) and I don't know how to install RR connection.
I tried to create new connection. I went through the options without any problems and on the end I network was rebooted and I was suggested to log out and log in. I did it and nothing.
When I click to monitor connection I see that computer is receiving something and if I click Connect button, I get message that connection is failed.
So, questions:
1) what's wrong?
2) am I going to have to manually press "Connect" everytime when I want Internet?
3) What is the difference between LAN and Cable connection? Which should I use for my RR service? both goes through LAN card?

Plz, help total novice....

Usually a cable connection uses DHCP where the server on the other end supplies an IP to your computer(s). You may have your IP hard coded. Try this...

su to root
run ifconfig

Does the IP address look like something you put in? If so, you'll need to change the network connection to use DHCP.

Here is what I did so far:
1) in MCC (mandrake control center)
- I created new connection (selected LAN)
- For NET device I had two options: a) Manual Choice and b) eth0: Xircom|Cardbus Ethernet 10/100
- I selected b (Xircom|...)
- selected Automatic IP (BOOTP/DHCP)
- Unchecked "Assign host name from DHCP Address"
- Left checked other three options (Track network card id, network hotplugging, start at boot)
- Host Name left empty (it's optional)
- Zeroconf Host name left empty (what's this)

Then I had to restart network.... and nothing....

If I go to "Manage Connections" and if I select DHCP (which is already selected) and click APPLY, MCC kinda freezes up and I have to reboot computer in order to be able to access MCC and its options. There goes my hope that freezing up is primary Microsoft's business.

As I said in MCC (in Monitor Connections) under eth0 tab I can see that computer is receiving some data, but I cannot connect to the internet.

When I run ifconfig I don't get any IP address. For eth0 it has no address (inet6 adr: fe80::210 ... etc)

And Yes, I have DHCP selected.

During boot process I can see that entry "bringing up ethernet (or something liket that)" has FAILED as a result.

I am not realy sure what kind of a problem I have here:
- is it my ethernet card
- or my TOSHIBA PCX2600 cable modem

so please tell me what do you think.....

Second part of the question is:
Toshiba modem has USB connection as well as my laptop so I was thinking to try to connect it through USB. I couldn't find any help on this. Is this possible?

I went to but information there are pretty much useless to me as a Linux beginner.

Hallo,
Don't know about RoadRunner, but @home will only give out an ip address if you set your host name to your 'account' number. In my case I have to set the host name to a ccXXXX number.

a quick google suggests you will need a roadrunner login program, rrlogin though...

maybe this will help:

until soemone comes along with a better solution

Try not to get frustrated. It sounds like you're taking all the right steps.

I wonder if the network card module is not the right one. Bring up a command prompt and run as root...
service network restart
If there are errors, please post.

You keep saying that you setup a "new connection". Is there a connection already setup? If there is, then make sure you delete it before creating a new one because they may both be setup to use the same interface (eth0) which could cause the system to lock up.

Kozusnik, sorry for delay....

What do you mean with "service network restart?" If I typed that into shell, nothing happens (command not found). So how can I restart network? You will have to get to my level if you are willing to help me. I've seen hundreds of web pages with some instructions and I am affraid I did not understand much. And on half of those I would get: command not found. Linux world will have to become more friendly toward novices if they want more people to switch from windows. Can you suggest some web page where I can learn about linux and kernel?

RhythmAce,

I had only one connection. Before creating new one I was always making sure that I deleted old one.... And ayway, another device would be called differently, eth0, eth1, eth2, etc.... so that shouldn't be a problem anyway....

In meantime I got rid of Mandrake and installed Fedora Core 3. The problem is same....Road Runner won't work....

The problem is not with RoadRunner. It's with your ethernet card. When you boot up you should see a message that says "Bringing up eth0". Does it give an [OK] after it? If not, what happens if you issue "ifup eth0" from the command line? Issue this command: "ifconfig > eth0.info". This will send the results of ifconfig to a file called eth0.info rather than the screen. Now if you can somehow get that file to the computer you are using now so you can copy and paste it here, that would be a great help.

OK, I feel we are going somewhere....

On boot, "bringing up eth0" has FAILED for result. I always thought it is because computer cannot find any networks.

So even I am not connected I should get OK? Right? I suspected that something is wrong with my NIC so I tried several of them. Every time I get FAILED during boot and sometime computer even stops to respond (during boot) unless I remove NIC.

Linux recognized NIC during installation.
I downloaded somewhere Linux drivers for my NIC. I didn't install them cause I don't now how. Please read my thread619-1127341. If Linux recognized NIC do I have to install drivers?
