Hi All, I have been tasked with installing Oracle Application Express 2.2.1.00.04 on a completely serparate piece of hardware. It's supposed to connect directly with our Oracle 10G database (on Solaris 10/Sparce system).

However, the instructions on the Oracle website state that you're supposed to configure the local TNS file, etc., for the Application Server (to install it). However, there is nothing else on this separate box, so there is no TNS file, etc., to configure for Application Express.

Do you know if I must first install the Oracle 10G client on this box BEFORE I install the Application Express?

Anyone have experience with this? I'm new!!

Thank you for you help.

I think you are missing something big, like a database. During installation of OAE it will ask you to select a database where it can install schema objects.
This means before installing OAE you should create an Oracle database and ensure the client computer has connectivity to the database. So, yes, you need to install Oracle Client on the workstation and copy down tnsnames.ora from the server to the workstation before installing OAE on the workstation.

All of this is explained in the documentation that downloaded as part of the OAE zip file. For example, search for and open file ./apex/doc/install.300/b32468.pdf.

Alternatively, you can download and install the eXpress Edition (XE) of Oracle Database 10g. This includes a database and application express bundled together, but the XE database has it's own list of issues to be aware of. See the Oracle Technology Network web site for more information.

Hi Mark

Thanks for the quick response.

I do have a database setup already on another server. However, I've been tasked with installin OAE on a separate server, that currently has nothing on it. I am to configure it to talk with the database server.

I'm assuming that the OAE box MUST have Oracle 10g client install first though?

Thank you again

Hi, JazzGeek

Is this a Linux installation?

Yes, it is. Solaris 10 SPARC.

Thanks for the help! I can't seem to find anyone who knows how to do this, so I'm stuck in the water here...

Thanks!

For ANY application, client, etc to connect to an Oracle database server, some client-side tool must be installed or configured.
Usually the Oracle SqlNet component is the minimum needed...But, there are Java-based and web browser connection options as well..There must be documentation that explains that
BUT,
from what I can see in the docs, Application Express seems to require that it, (or some of it components, at least), must be installed on a server running an Oracle database instance and access to it is then by web browser.

The Oracle Application Express requires that the Oracle Application Server (HTTP) be installed.

Would this substitute for the Oracle DB client? (Right now, the Oracle DB client is not installed and I do not know if it MUST beinstalled BEFORE installign Oracle Application Server and Oracle Application Express.)

Any idea on this?

Thanks
