I recently installed Oracle 8.1.7. Oracle installed ok and I was able to create users and tables etc. I then tried to install Developer 6i. It wouldnt install unless I changed the oracle_home, which I did, and now neither Oracle or Developer will run. I get tns names not found related errors.

What is the proper way to install Oracle 8.1.7 and install Developer 6i to use the database you just installed? Is there a faq detailing the high points of Oracle and Oracle Components installation?

any information/suggestions would be appreciated

Please take a look at Metalink document 74131.1, which discusses installing Developer 6 and Oracle 8i on the same physical NT server. One issue that is mentioned is that Developer 6 has to be installed in the default Oracle home. I'm not sure why. This may possibly be the cause of your problems. If you installed Oracle 8.1.7 first, you very likely used the default home for your database, not Developer.

Im sorry to be stupid, but where can I find Metalink documents? Im sure the problem has something to do with those oracle homes problems, but I guess I dont really understand the concept of oracle homes and why the oracle home is such a pain...

thanks for the reply

Sorry that my answer was unclear. Metalink is Oracle's online customer support site. You can browse documentation, download patches, research bugs, and other fun stuff. Registration is required. Their web site is
After you register, do a search for "74131.1". That should return a list of relevant documenation, including the article with that doc id.

The Oracle home is simply the file directory where the Oracle software is installed. Normally you can use the same home for multiple products, but in your case you are running into some sort of compatibility problem.

I suspect that the reason you need to use two Oracle homes is that Oracle 8.1.7 comes with the newer "Universal Installer" Perhaps Developer 6 is shipped with the older installer. The Universal Installer is sufficiently incompatible with the old installer that it can't install software to the same home. That's why you have a fairly tricky installation on your hands.

Yes, that's probably the problem. The installer for the developer is the "old" style installer that developer has used at least since forms 4.5/reports 2.5. but the developer is the latest available from the technet.oracle site.

thanks again for the info...

another problem, I tried the metalink, but you have to have some kind of oracle support id number to register. Our original vendor would hold any oracle support contract so I dont have access to a valid number.

I dont suppose there's any way to get to the appropriate document through technet.oracle....?

thanks again...

I think you should contact your vendor. They are the ones who should be able to answer technical questions, like hardware requirements and installation instruction.

I dont think they would be interested in helping me learn enought to compete with them.. <G>

Clear your previous installation by deleting directories and registry entries (hope they contain no useful information).

Install Developer 6i into default_home.
Install Oracle 8.1.7 into some_home (new name and another directory)
Check 8.1.7 installation (try to connect from sql*plus or some other tool from 8.1.7 package)
Edit tnsnames.ora/sqlnet.ora in default_home\net8\admin to include entry for your local database
Try to connect to your database from some product from Developer package

Don't worry, be happy.
