Most internal modems are winmodems, which means, they lack some chips, and need a driver, so the processor of your machine can emulate that missing chips.
This makes the modems a bit cheaper and much less usable for linux.
First: Find out manufactor, chipset, version and name of your modem.
There is a linux-winmodem-list, where experiences with winmodems is collected.
For some there are useful drivers available, for some of them you have to pay (i.e.: hsfmodem, linuxant, connexant - my laptop modem), and for some you might fail finding a proper driver at all.
Code:
lspci | grep odem
# or - if no results:
lspci
might help you to find out some details of your modem
(... VIA... Intel 537 [AC97 Modem] (rev 30)) in my case.
