I am trying to get some insight on the proper method for installing Exchange service packs. Since a service pack for Exchange includes multiple files (unlike NT/2000 SP's), the obvious question is "is it necessary to download and install each one?" or does this vary based on individual situations? I have been diligent in trying to find an answer to this seemingly simple question (MS and other Exchange websites, and keyword/FAQ search at this site) and find it frustrating to come up blank. Help would be appreciated.

A SP for Exchange is only one file. Download the extracted file. Extract it to a temporary location. Run update.exe. That should do it for you.
