Hi all,

We have a reporting tool which lives on RedHat Linux along with are other Oracle software. It's called Oracle Discoverer. We are rolling out multi-byte language sets and our Japan office has requested the use of the MS PGothic font (readily available through the Japanese Multi-Language pack from Microsoft's website.

Regardless, we are have some quetsions on how to get the MSGOTHIC.ttc font package installed on a RedHat Linux OS? Will Linux even accept that format? Must it be converted? Is there an alternative Linux-ready MS PGothic style font should none of the above options be available?

I am just looking for some general information on what we can do to get this font set loaded so that we can proceed with testing.

Any assistance is GREALTY appreciated.

I'd be more worried about the potential copyright issues. Judging from the filename in question, you're trying to install a Micrsoft font on Linux, and Microsoft doesn't give anything away....

Dont think you need to worry so much about the legal issues...
I'm going to have to disagree, here. A lot of fonts, even TrueType fonts, are copyrighted intellectual property.

The specific font in question, MS PGothic, sounds to me like a font created by Microsoft. And when was the last time Microsoft didn't copyright something?

Well if you can come up with something that looks like a
copyright or license paper on usage of TTF, I'll agree.
Until then here's some reading....

And for the MS PGothic TTF's:

OpenSuse has an tutorial on installing additional TTF's.

I don't have a copy of MS PGothic available. I do, however, have 320 other fonts on my XP workstation. I have opened more than 100 of those font files using Windows Font Viewer and have discovered that all but one of those have copyright notices embedded in them.

For example, the copyright notice in Verdana reads, "Typeface and data [©] 1996 Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved." Other font files have copyright notices from Bitstream, Monotype and the Font Factory. And every copyright notice includes the text "All rights reserved."
