I want to insert files in an indesign document from a file but i dont know how to do this, please help. im a beginner user.

...file > place (apple/command + 'D') and click on your document, or just drag the image onto your indesign document window...

...with file > place there is a checkbox to allow more import options and to also replace a selected item...

Andrew

...the files you place appear in the links window (window > links or apple/command, shift + D)...

...in the links window you can also embed images into the indesign doc via the flyout menu (arrow top right of the window), however you are better off just having them linked wherever possible. In this menu you can also edit linked images via 'Edit Original' this will then launch the the image in the app it was created in allowing you to edit and svae back into indesign on the fly...

...if you hold down the shift key when selecting the image to be placed, you are able to choose the extra import options without have to check the 'show import options' box...

...if you have the import options checked with your first image then subsequent images placed will have the option checked by default thereafter in that session, when you quit indesign and relaunch it defaults back to being unchecked...

Andrew

...when your doc is complete and ready to be sent to a print provider, make use of the file > package function this will gather all elements around your hard disk used in the document and collect them into a folder ready for transfer, this includes fonts...

Andrew

...and to add to the above there are two tools to use with placed images, the black arrow selects the frame the image is in, the white arrow selects the actual image...

Andrew

thanks for all your help guys this a really useful forum, i will try out your tips especially the one for getting my document ready for print. :)
