I'm just learning to use Illustrator at the moment and I need to insert an image from Photoshop to Illustrator. The image is circular and i need to lay it over a colour background in Illustrator but i can't seem to get rid of the white background when i insert it.

Can anyone explain how to do it?

Easiest way would be to replace the white background w/transparent pixels in Photoshop. Either define white as transparent when exporting to transparency-capable format (GIF, PNG, etc.), or if you have white in the main image, magic wand/elliptical select the background, delete to transparent, and save.

You have to create a clipping path in Photoshop to export transparency.

Using OSX 10.3.8 on a G4

You don't have to. *.psd, *.gif, *.tif and *.png support transparency to varying degrees. Taking it from PS to AI I'd save it as a *.psd, and put the art on layer 0, sh*tcan the background layer.
