how to increment a number w/o using autonumber 2

hi,

im switching a current autonumber field/ which is the PK. I want it to display and function the same as it does now, just as a text box or number field. the format looks like this: "SHP-" #
where SHP- is perment and # is the incrementing number. It Seems like an easy thing but my code has bugs in it and is getting messy.
