Hi All,

I have 2 machines. One has solaris 5.9 installed on it and other has solaris 5.10. The performance of solaris 5.9 is very slow compared to 5.10. A simple operation like copying a file is taking 4 min in 9 as compared to 2 min in 5.10.

Is there a way in which i can tweak the performance of solaris 5.9 to make it a little faster.

Thanks

I take it these machines are of the same or similar spec? have you done any troubleshooting as regards system montoring whilst (for example) the copy is taking place (ps, vmstat, sar etc/)? I have never used Solaris 9 or 10 so it's difficult to be specific. Are the boxes patched, and if, so are they to the latest applicable level?

I want to be good, is that not enough?

Just a file copy within the same machine shouldn'd have that big of a difference. It shouldn't be an OS version difference.

Like Ken asks, are the two machines the same spec? Does one have faster CPU and faster drives?

I would also look to see if the faster copier is copying from and to two physically different drives. That would be faster than copying from/to the same physical drive.

Also, are any arrays involved? Any SAN? Does one machine have a lot of other processes doing work?

There are a lot of other suspects before OS version.

Although, Solaris 10 does have a highly optimised TCP/IP stack, so copies that hit the network should be faster (assuming Solaris 10 to Solaris 10).
