how to increase deiskspace for dc

Hi,

I have a server which runs on win 2003 SP1. I recently realised that i have been running low on disk space(with only afew MB of space left). This is also our DC.And only 4gig of space allocated for the it. Because of low disk space, the sus is unable to download updates.

How would i increase the diskspace?? there are 5 drives in my server. Would expanding the diskspace using softwares like partition magic or even the one which comes with windows pose a problem to the performance of my dc and ad?

This all depends on if you are talking about the system partition or not?

Personally, I wouldn't attempt any changes to system partitions on a DC. If a partition is just a file store, you could backup the data, kill the partition, recreate it with the right size, and then restore the data from tape.

But, you can do things to help reduce the demand on the existing partition, such as moving the print spooling directory.

Curious as to why only a 4GB partition was used?

Hi Pat,

The partitioning was done by the vendor assigned to install the win 2003 OS and dc in our server. And that was b4 i joined the firm.
But now, i'm facing the problem. I cant download windows updates and then push to the clients systems via sus because of low disk space.

Is there a better a solution??

sus is in another partition, but aucatalog1.cab is in the inetpub which is in the c drive.

do u think i should install my inetpub in another partition and then migrate to wsus one shot?

You could do that. Do you have backup software installed on c:? The catalogs and log files could be using up some space as well.

Move the print spool directory, as well.

You can also remove uninstall directories for hotfixes found in the Windows directory.

I am using the windows backup to do daily backup of the server. May i know where is the backup catalogs and the print spool are stored in the c drive?

Go into your printers folder, and click FILE>SERVER PROPERTIES and look on the ADVANCED tab. It should show you the spool folder, and will likely point to something like C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\PRINTERS

I am using windows backup to do the daily backup of the server. I feel that deleting the backup catalogs might free up some space. May i know where are the catalogs stored? I know the tasks or stored in the data and have deleted them.But, when i go to Restore and Manage Media in the backup console, i could still see old job files there. How can i remove them?

You can't increase space for the system partition using Windows Disk Manager.
There are several ways to free up disk space.
- Make sure your applications are installed to a different partition
- Move the swap file to another partition
- Make sure hibernation is turned off (though I can't think of a reason to have it turned on on a server, or why it's even possible on a server)
- Delete all $nt* folders from the %windir% directory (don't delete $hf_mig$)
- Empty %windir%\Softwaredistribution\Download
- Move the print spooler to another partition
- Move %windir%\ServicePackFiles to another partition and adjust the registry to have it point to the new location

Create a scheduled .Bat file to delete all tmp files everynight.
Agree with Guidovk, you should have your apps on a different partition.
Pagefile on a different partition.
I have a couple of old Win 2000 server , 4 gig partitions, with 2 Gig free, mainly due to having programs installed on a different partition.
