Hi

I'm the proud owner of two old (I think) IBM servers, that are rumored to be AS/400 systems. IBM, in their infinite wisdom, did not put the model name/number in any obvious place. On a very small labels behind a panel, I find that these are Type 9406. But the iSeries System Handbook has several models, all of which are Type 9406.

What to do?

Thanks!

on the tag it should say 9406-xxx, xxx is the model number. And yep they are old as400 servers, all I know as I don't work on the 400,

I shall use google before asking stupid questions!

Thanks for the reply. Inside a fold-down panel on the front of the unit, I found:

Type 9406-5XX

Yep, that's '5XX'.

The document "IBM Eserver iSeries System Handbook Version 5 Release 2 November 2003" states, on p. 101: "The AS/400 Models 4xx and 5xx are not supported with V5R2."

P. 603 of the same tome states "Version 5 Release 1 of IBM Operating System/400 licensed program is the last
release to support the following RISC models:
 4xx
 5xx"

These systems came to us in a pile of older equipment from another facility. My basic question is: does this equipment have any value, or should I just send it along to scrap?

Thanks

Value is a subjective term. They may have value, but only if you need them or can find someone else who does. Your best bet is probably to put an ad in a trade magazine or on eBay. Good luck!

If they are fully functional and are looking to learn OS/400 you got enough to get started (if I am not mistaken a 9406 is a fairly large beast). Otherwise I would contact a reseller of user AS/400 equipment since you may be able to sell it for it parts.
