Hi,

The situation:

We have 2 intranet servers ( the 1st for the site A, and the second one for the site B).
The both webservers are the same...

I would like to know if it is possible to create something in the dns to reply by the right intranet server depending the site.

ie: intranetserver.mycompany.com in state of intranetserverA.mycompany.com + intranetserverB.mycompany.com

Many thanks for your help.

Sorry )

We have 2 sites (Site A and Site B).
Onto the 'site A' we have an intranet server (Server A) and onto the 'site B' we have the mirror of the intranet server.

I declared the both servers as 'intranet.company.com' in the dns.

Is it ok for the explanation ?

So, my question was:

if i'm onto the site A, is it possible to force the DNS to answer with the ip address of the main intranet server, or with the ip address of the mirror if i'm onto the site B ?

many thanks.

verspieren,

We did something similar to this in a classroom environment. In the index.html, we just put a small indication of which computer was serving the page, somewhere in the code flow.

You could even put it in as a comment, so that it's visible when you view source, but not visible to users who don't.

No, this is not something that you could do with DNS. You could have two IP's in DNS for intranet.company.com, ie.

intranet.company.com IN A 11.22.33.44
IN A 12.23.34.45

However, when the client asks the DNS server for the IP address for intranet.company.com, the DNS server could respond with either address.

Actually, thinking about it, you can do this with DNS. Well, with BIND 9 anyway.

As your two sites will be on different IP ranges and I presume that they talk to one DNS server, you can create "views" in the named.conf file to match queries from particular IP ranges. You would then use a different zone file for each site (A&B) and control access using the acl's in each 'view'. Each zone file could then resolve to a different IP.

Just an idea.

Chris.
