I am very much a PSP novice using version 7. I have some black and white maps in jpg form for use on the net and wish to highlight certain roads in colour. I also wish to draw attention to other areas by adding some 12pt round (solid) dots, in different colours, to relate to a key below the maps.

Do I have to use layers for this because try as I might (and I have tried very very hard!) I just cannot get layers to work.

Many thanks.

You can use Layers, and it will make yur life easier when you have to erase something. But lets take it from the beginning.

If the Image is in black and white, you will have to increase the color depth so it can take colors. If I remember correctly, in PSP 7 it was located in the Colors Menu-> Increase Color Depth. Takle up to as much as it will go I believe it was 16 million colors.

Select the Brush tool, and set its size to however thick you
want the line to be. And just draw the line over the Map.

Layers are like panes of glass placed over the image you can draw on them and th eimage will show through the areas without any drawings.
If You want to use layers, go to the layer pane an create anew Transparent Raster Layer select it and draw over it. This will allow you to move it around or hide it. it will also maintain the original map without any marks shoudl you need to erase something you will just need to delete the layer.

Many thanks for this very thorough and helpful reply, vacunita. I will certainly try it out and let you know how I managed. I understand quite well the concept of layers, my problem seems to be the actual creation and handling of the layers themselves.

Layers aren't difficult to handle. ANd there are alot of things you can do with them.
Handling Layers is done from the layer pallette usually located at the bottom right of the PSP window.

Maybe this tutorial will help you. It's for PSP6 but it should hold true for PSP7.

That tutorial looks very useful. Many thanks again for your valued help and I will let you know how I did. Can't try it straight away as it's getting late here in the UK, but will give it a go tomorrow. Treb
