I can't figure out how to have an equation with the cell the equation it is in, be a part of the equation. Office keeps telling me it can't be a part of its own equation. I am trying to accumulate points and have year to date = year to date + whatever.
Please help.
B1 -> 100
B2 -> 200
B3 -> 300
B4 -> 400
year to date -> 1000 <-formula: =SUM(B1:B4)
plus whatever -> 200 <-number entered as a VALUE
Total -> 1200 <-formula: =B5+B6
Excel's problem with how you have been attempting to enter the formula is INDEED a VALID PROBLEM. This is what Excel refers to as a "CIRCULAR REFERENCE" - i.e. wherein the formula refers to ITSELF. This HAS BEEN and ALWAYS WILL BE a "situation to AVOID".
