Hi,

I'm trying to install a second IDE drive on my netware 3.12 to have a second volume on my file server.
But when I load the IDE module it was reattached to the first device (with the system installed on).
I've tryed all addresses suggest by system at boot time, but without any result.

So I suppose I've miss something to make it work fine, and if someone have an idea, or if someone know anything about this it will make me very happy :)

Thanks a lot for your time

Hi, Nawak

So you have the 2nd drive connected and you can see it OK under dos, as drive D: or whatever? Use Fdisk to create a partition table. I usually also allocate a DOS partition there and copy everything from the DOS partition on the C: drive over there as a backup.

Then you start up the server. You load a 2nd disk driver for the 2nd drive and accept the default interrupt and address it gives you (they are normally ok). Once the server is up, load INSTALL and select the 2nd drive and use it to allocate Novell partition over there (only one Novell partition per volume, so allocate all the space you will need). Then create a volume in the partition just allocated.

That should be all there is to it.

I think you didn't realize you have to load a 2nd IDE.DSK or whatever disk driver you are using for the 2nd drive. You can load it manually from the console the first time to see what interrupt/address you will need and then modify your startup.ncf accordingly.

Hi, Jock

And thank you for your reply :)

But it doesn't solve my problem:
I've tried to load ide module with every parameters purpose to me (sorry for my poor english ;), and I've do the same with the isadisk module.

I've tried different disk too, I've finished to decide change the machine ... without any result :/

I've tried to make fat32 partition with win98 boot disk, but the netware DOS couldn't seen it.
So I made fat partition. Now the DOS (when I boot normally the Netware 3.12 and I "DOWN" and "EXIT") can see it.

But when I'm trying to load modules IDE or ISADISK I obtain error (always the same):

this appear after I've tried some incorrect parameters:
-IDE-015: the selected hardware is not available for this IDE driver.
Attempt to reinitialize re-entrant module FAILED
(this last exist because the only parameter accepted is for the first IDE drive, and is in use with the ISADISK driver).

Like I'm using ISADISK for the first drive it doesn't purpose any parameters for the time I try to load it:
-Loading module ISADISK.DSK
Supported I/O port values are NONE
All supported options are ALREADY in use
ISADISK-005: An invalid I/O parameter was selected.
Attempt to reinitialize re-entrant module FAILED

I don't know what I must do to make it work :/

So if some one can help me :)

mathias

PS: I'm trying to install patchs for partition greater than 8Go, but the systems crash everytime.
Perhaps my problem are link. I don't know. But I'm going to post an other message about this one.

Hi, Mathias

So it sounds like the drive is connected OK. I usually set up the 2nd drive as the master drive on the second IDE controller, but it should work as a slave also.

I think the problem may be the new drive has a geometry that the old IDE.DSK and ISADISK.DSK drivers can't understand. Since you want to access large drives, you will have to use a different disk driver.

See the FAQ in this forum - it has a very good discussion of installing large disk support and the use of the .HAM drivers has been covered before also. I think you have to use the same driver for both drives - certainly if you don't it won't be used re-entrantly so it will cost you memory to load both and I think they will conflict.

Hi, Jock

Thanks a lot again :)

I've install the patch and new modules, and it work fine now, so I'm very happy :)

I need to use a fat partition on new disk to extract files but all necessary files can stay on the old fat partition (5Mo like in the manual :)

Thanks too for the guy who wrote the FAQ, and have a nice day all ^_^
