How to handle Plugin errors within Layer

I display a dynamic PDF file within a layer on a screen which I am doing via a plugin. How do I handle the error when the PDF file is not found? Currently if the PDF is not found the layer displays a portion of the previous screen; all other layers display normal.

Is there a technique to handle this Not Found File plugin condition?
