I was in text mode as root and went into the gnome gui by typing startx. once in the gui it said that i was root and i should run as another user.

I went back into the text and switched users, then i tried to type startx and it said that i couldn't and that perhaps i could not have the proper permissions.

I changed the permissions on the .gnome directory to 707 which is full control for root and full control to others. Still couldnt get into gui from the other user.

what can i do to solve this problem?

Is XFree86 (the binary) suid root? It wont run ( or complain HEAVILY) if it isnt root.

chmod /usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86 +s

Should do the trick. Be aware, that I just dont like this solution (but it'll work). Please let Tek-Tips members know if their posts were helpful.
